Saona Island in hurricane season 2026

The Atlantic season has seven weeks left, and 2026 has been quiet so far. Here is what that means for a boat day to Saona in October and November.

Every Saona day trip depends on the sea. The boats are speedboats and catamarans, and when the authorities tell small boats to stay in port, nobody goes to the island.

Hurricane season is the time of year when that happens most. This post covers what the forecasters said about 2026, how a storm or a big swell stops the boats, and how to book so a bad day costs you nothing.

The quick answer

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with most activity from mid August to mid October. NOAA expects a below-normal 2026 because of El Niño. When the emergency centre (COE) orders small and medium boats to stay in port, Saona trips do not run. Every tour on this site cancels free up to 24 hours before, so book early in your stay and keep a spare day.

When is hurricane season in the Dominican Republic?

From 1 June to 30 November. The statistical peak is 10 September, and most storms form between mid August and mid October.

The National Hurricane Center sets the Atlantic season at 1 June to 30 November and puts its peak on 10 September, "with most activity occurring between mid-August and mid-October". In an average year, its climatology shows about 12 named storms by 11 October. The season does not end early: November storms are rarer, not impossible.

For Saona that means the first half of October is still prime storm time, and the risk fades through November. The dry season, roughly December to April, is the safe bet for a boat day.

What does NOAA forecast for the rest of the 2026 season?

A below-normal season: 7 to 13 named storms, 2 to 6 hurricanes and up to 2 major hurricanes, with a 75% chance of below-normal activity.

NOAA's August 2026 update of 6 August kept the May forecast: a 75% chance of a below-normal season, 20% near-normal and 5% above-normal. By then the season had produced two named storms, Arthur and Bertha, and no hurricanes. The reason is El Niño, which emerged in the Pacific in June: it "increases wind shear, which tends to prevent tropical storms from forming or from getting stronger once formed".

Below normal is not zero. It takes one storm on the wrong track to close the ports for a few days, and a quiet season can still send long swells onto the coast.

Do Saona boats run when a storm or big swell is near?

No. When the COE restricts navigation, fragile, small and medium boats must stay in port, and that covers the Saona fleet.

The Dominican emergency operations centre (COE) issues maritime restrictions from the weather service's bulletins, for storms and for plain bad swell. Diario Libre reported in March 2026 that, with abnormal waves on the Atlantic coast "from Saona Island to Cabo Cabrón", operators of fragile, small and medium boats had to remain in port. That was in March, outside hurricane season: big waves alone can do it.

The tours themselves treat weather differently. The Quetzal catamaran says it operates in all weather conditions. The small-group speedboat tour says the supplier can cancel for bad weather. Even on an open day, a small speedboat is a rough ride in a swell; guests on the small-group tour warn about bumps on ordinary days.

Saona speedboats are small boats, and small boats are the ones told to stay in port when the sea is up.

What happens to my Saona booking if the weather turns?

You can cancel any tour on this site for a full refund up to 24 hours before, and the operator can call the day off for bad weather.

All eight tours we list carry the same policy on Viator: cancel up to 24 hours before the start for a full refund. That gives you a clean exit if a storm shows up in the five-day forecast. Inside 24 hours you depend on the operator's decision, so watch the forecast the evening before and check your messages in the morning.

Our advice for October and November: book Saona for the first or second day of your stay, not the last. If the boats are held, you still have days to move it. Our Punta Cana guide covers the early starts if you are coming from the resorts.

Is October or November 2026 a good time to visit Saona?

Yes, with a flexible date. The odds of a storm drop week by week as the season winds down.

We would go. A below-normal forecast, a season past its peak and free cancellation make the risk small, as long as you leave room to reschedule. The trade-off is the odd squall and a sea that can be choppy after a front passes.

If a rough crossing worries you, pick the bigger boat: the 75-foot catamaran from Bayahibe has more room than a small speedboat, and one guest described a relaxed 90-minute sail. Pack a light rain jacket and something for seasickness; our packing list has the rest.

Frequently asked questions

When does hurricane season end in the Dominican Republic?

On 30 November. The National Hurricane Center puts the peak on 10 September, with most activity between mid August and mid October.

Is 2026 a bad hurricane season?

Not so far. NOAA's August 2026 update predicts a below-normal season (75% chance) because of El Niño, with 7 to 13 named storms in total. Two had formed by 6 August, and no hurricanes.

Do Saona tours get cancelled for weather?

Yes, when the COE orders small and medium boats to stay in port, or when the operator judges the sea too rough. Every tour on this site can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before.
